Avondale Vineyards offers a wide range of premium organic red and white wines. For example, some wines are 12 years old.
Avondale specializes in artisanal wines, produced naturally and slowly, with unique flavours.
In addition, to traditional estate visits, Avondale proposes an “Eco Wine Safari” to learn more about the company’s philosophy and natural production techniques.
Avondale also houses a gastronomic restaurant focusing on Organic, Seasonal and Local Products, to make the most out of your visit.
Holiable's Review of Avondale's Eco Wine Safari
How to get there
Located in the town of Paarl on the wine route in South Africa, the Avondale vineyard is easily accessible by car. and only 30 minutes away from Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, very famous for their charming colonial streets and their numerous wineries producing the best wines of South Africa.
Also, you can reach Avondale from CapeTown in only 45 minutes by car.
Philosophy and concept
For Johnathan Grieve, the founder of the Avondale Wine, it was essential to produce wines with unique flavours, far from mass products and above all environmentally friendly. In the early 2000s, he decided to change his production practices to place nature at the heart of his products.
Thanks to the superior quality of the estate’s soil and the benefits of the environment, the vineyard is based on a dynamic living system that takes into consideration nature, humans and animals. Johnathan uses organic and bio-dynamic production practices within the estate and rejects all chemical products and pesticides.
The site obviously offers a tasting of its seven classic natural wines for a price of only 4 euros. You can enjoy this experience every day of the week from 10am to 4pm.
Eco Wine Safari
For an off the beaten track activity offered by the winery, you can experience the Estate’s Eco Wine Safari. During this 2.5 hours tour, guests can explore the entire winery and understand the techniques used to produce Mother Nature-approved wines.
You can enjoy this experience from Wednesday to Sunday at 10am.
Here is the program for this activity:
- Tasting of classic wine produced on the estate.
- Visit the site to observe the pioneering production methods in harmony with nature. A tasting of artisanal wines is offered in the estate's vineyards, with a breathtaking view of the mountains.
- Visit of the huge three-storey cellar of the vineyard.
- Return to the reception to enjoy the view and a last glass of wine.
We spent half a day in this vineyard and were charmed by the estate and the beautiful views from the vines
We had the chance to taste the natural wines, and we can confirm that the flavours are unique. We were also able to immerse ourselves in the cellar which we strongly advise you to visit.
We met Johnathan, a man who is passionate about his job and in love with nature, as well as a good part of the staff, all friendly and very professional.
If you wish to cross the South African wine route one day, Avondale Wine is a highly recommended stop, off the beaten touristy tracks.
Final Tip : Avondale has its own gourmet restaurant, the FABER.Sharing the same values of respect for the environment as the vineyard, this restaurant works hand in hand with organic producers from the region. It offers a homemade, seasonal menu centred on products from organic farming.
