Our review of QO Amsterdam

Getting there

The QO Amsterdam is ideally located.

It's a 15-minute metro ride from Amsterdam Centraal Train Station, away from the highly touristic city center.

The metro station is roughly 2 minutes walk from the hotel.

Remember that Amsterdam is the city of Bicycles, more bikes than cars! So in all logic, there is a cycling track at the doorstep.

Forgot your bike? No worries, you can rent e-bikes on site.

A final note on transport, if you need a taxi, we liked that the hotel works with Taxi Electric, a taxi company exclusively driving e-cars and that goes even further. #green

Circular and Smart Conception

The building is a smart tower! QO calls its facade, the intelligent façade.

The thermal panels that also make the blinds of your room windows react to the weather/climate conditions.

Here's how it works:

    • During hot summer days (yes, it happens here too) the blinds will close to keep your room cool and fresh.
Benefit: you will use less aircon' when you're back
    • In winter, on sunny days, the opposite happens, to bring heat and warm up your room.

Smart system!

The Hotel is certified LEED and materials for the construction and the design were chosen sustainably, here are a few examples :

    • For heating: the hotel uses aquifer thermal energy
    • The grey waters (from your shower, sink) are reused to flush the toilets
    • 80% of the concrete used for the building is recycled concrete from an Old Amsterdam Building
    • The carpets travelers from recycled fishing net yarns.

Eco-friendly bedrooms

We're in Amsterdam, so do not expect huge sized rooms and suites, but be sure that everything is very well thought to optimize space. The design is minimalistic, cozy and uses mostly neutral tones.

But we're not here to talk style, are we?

What we loved most, is that rooms are packed with eco-friendly features:

      • Bed linen, towels, are all made of fair-trade organic cotton.
      • Toiletries are refillable and come from a local clean cosmetics brand
      • You can borrow the tote bag and umbrella during your stay if you forgot yours
      • Other amenities are all eco-friendly

You'll get your veggies from the roof

QO hotel has two restaurants and a greenhouse on the roof.

The greenhouse is not for decoration purposes or the hype, trust us, you'll taste the produce in your dishes or cocktails.

All freshly picked and served the same day.
The Green House will also be used as an educational tool for schoolchildren.

We also appreciated the breakfast which highlights Dutch specialties. If you're expecting an 'all you can eat' kind of breakfast, that's not what you will get.

Everything is à la carte. The beauty of the à la carte concept is that it limits food waste drastically.

Bonuses

We also liked that the QO is using supplies mainly from local companies, that have the same ethics.

For example: the filtered water in the rooms, is supplied by Made Blue. Each bottle served brings 700 liters of water in a developing country.

Our Ho-Feel

The QO is a great choice for eco-friendly urban travelers, willing to visit Amsterdam away from the crowds.

We really appreciated the whole circular concept and the fact that the hotel works mainly with local and fair suppliers.

It is another example that eco-friendly hotels can be modern, cozy and comfortable and are not reserved to nature destinations.

The hotel opened during the first semester of 2018 and we bet it will soon get famous among the eco-friendly travellers.

Good For: Urban travel, culture & heritage, local food, veggie/vegan-friendly
