Holiable’s Review of the West Coast House

Getting there

The West Coast House is a hostel located in the small town of Midigama in Sri Lanka.

It is easily accessible by car and tuk-tuk from any town on the coast. It takes about 10 minutes from the nearby small seaside resorts of Weligama and Ahangama. It will take you about 30 minutes from the town of Mirissa and 40 minutes from the famous Galle Fort.

Buses are also available all along the coast and you can easily reach the hotel from wherever you are.

A peaceful place to meet people

If you decide to spend a few days on the Sri Lankan beaches at the beginning or the end of your trip, the small town of Midigama is a highly recommended haven of peace with its wild beaches, far from the over touristy Mirissa.

The atmosphere and ambience in this small town are very pleasant and the locals are welcoming and friendly.

The West Coast House is only a few meters from the beach, you only have to cross a street to see the surfers. It is the perfect spot for both amateur and professional surfers who want to enjoy the Sri Lankan waves.

It is a relaxed and comfortable place. For those who wish to have their privacy, the hostel has two private rooms with a king size bed, a fan, a mosquito net and a en suite bathroom.

For backpackers, or those on a tighter budget, the hostel also offers two 4 bunk bed dorms with one bathroom per dormitory. Note that sheets and towels are provided by the house.

The hostel has an indoor living room and a beautiful outdoor terrace, ideal for reading, playing board games and meeting other travellers.

A socially engaged hostel

The West Coast is a very environmentally friendly house and invites its guests to embrace its values.

All waste collected by the hostel is recycled and/or composted to reduce its impact on the country.

No plastic is used within the house, which opts for reusable glass bottles. Each guest is encouraged to reconsider his or her consumption. For this purpose, large bags are available at the exit of the hostel to encourage guests to do beach clean-up sessions.

In addition, the owner of the site works hand in hand with local handicrafts from Midigama and surrounding towns to give them visibility.

In fact, a small shop is located inside the hostel where some of the products made by hand by different artisans are displayed. Travellers can purchase these products and activate their network to promote these beautiful projects.

Our opinion

We had a very pleasant day and night at The West Coast House. We stayed in a private room, rather clean and nice.

We liked the proximity of the house to the beaches.

If you want to meet other travellers during your trip, this is a place where discussions are easy and you feel good.

Nevertheless, if you want to enjoy the country's beaches in places of exception and luxury, this is not the ideal place. The comfort is not optimal, the service is not as efficient as a four-star hotel and you will not find a sea view.
